Sengoku Period (戰國時代) was one of the most critical periods in the Japanese history. During this period, Japan suffered a century of political instability because of the weakening of the central authority; i.e. the Ashikaga Shogunate (室町幕府). In other words, it's a period of warlordism: powerful domains expanded their spheres of influence.
It was generally agreed that the Sengoku Period started in 1467. However, there were different theories for the end of the Period; e.g.:
1573: Oda Nobunaga (織田信長) abolished the Ashikaga Shogunate -- in a narrow sense
1603: Tokugawa Ieyasu (德川家康) established the Tokugawa Shogunate (德川幕府) -- the whole nation was finally unified
1615: Tokugawa Ieyasu completely destroyed the Castle of Osaka (大坂城) -- the real beginning of a new era
1st stage: Onin War (應仁之亂) (1467-1477)

2nd stage: the rise of sengoku daimyo (戰國大名) (1477-1573)

3rd stage: Azuchi-Momoyama Period (安土‧桃山時代 or 織豐時代) (1573-1603)

4th stage: Siege of Osaka (大坂之役) (1614-1615)
